The Charity 7″

When the band Hounds & Harlots was conceived to be the “voice” for our new society, we created what would become our symbol; The Knife, The Key and The Ouroboros, which represent what we stand for; Justice, Freedom, Self-reflexivity & Unity. We firmly believe in applying these values to everything we do.

We asked ourselves how could we help others with our music?

Then it came to us, a charity 7”! So we got on the phone, and asked three of our friends if they would like to be a part of this project, a chance to help out some of their own favorite charities. Within days this simple dream was born. Hounds & Harlots  in collaboration with GC Records (www.gcrecords.com), Asian Man Records (www.asianmanrecords.com) and Paper + Plastick Records (www.paperandplastick.com), came up with a plan to donate three Hounds & Harlots songs with a special “Thank You” track to make a 7” titled DEVOTED that will help out FOUR DIFFERENT CHARITIES.

This is how it will work.

We only have 60 days (Oct 31st) to reach our monetary goal to get the record made. Once we achieve that we are going to divide 1000 7” records into four different color (250 each) groups, each color is charity specific. When a color is sold the profits will go to that specific charity.

  • Hounds & Harlots charity is Axis Of Justice, www.axisofjustice.net (color WHITE)
  • GC Records charity is Skateistan, www.skateistan.org (color ORANGE)
  • Asian Man Records charity is Plea For Peace, www.pleaforpeace.com (color PURPLE)
  • Paper + Plastick Records charity will be the band PROTAGONIST, www.paperandplastick.com/news.php?article_id=225 (color ROOT BEER).

Now you may ask “how can I be a part of this?”

Well the only way this is going to work is with the help of everyone! We set up a page on Kickstarter.com to raise money to make this all happen. By pledging, you’re not just giving up money to have a record made, we have set up different pledge tiers as an incentive. Depending on how much you would like to pledge, you can do everything from pre-order a record to having your very own name and charity included in the art or even mentioned on the side B “Thank You” track!

We all know music can change lives, and this is your chance to really put that into action!

!Upstarter Review of our DEMO – 4 out of 5 stars

“What and or who are these Hounds & Harlots”, you may ask. “Am I with or am I not with them”, that is another damn fine question, one of several I fix on answering to some degree in the next few sentences. Well let’s start with the former. Hounds & Harlots is a punk rock band rising up outta the San Francisco Bay.

The punk rock quartet consists of (at the time of this recording) Greg De Hoot on Bass and Vox, Bryan Zimmerman on Guitar and Vox, “Nice Guy” Brandon on Guitar and Vox and Cory Cunningham on Drums. What you have here is the basic ingredients for punk rock, four strapping young lads from the dark heart of the city by the bay.

The demo disc that I received is done up in modern era DIY fashion; A burned 3-track CD, hand markered for identification purpose and a b/w photocopy liner. I applaud the effort and am glad it wasn’t on cassette, ‘cause I don’t even have a cassette deck anymore. Something more to mention about the DIY ethic of the band, they are constantly rocking the social media. I, in fact, first heard of them through some mutual friends on Twitter. Way to capitalize on the new means to network.

The aforementioned disc contains three tracks: Divisadero, Wasted and Lots to Learn. They are all strong, but the clear leader is the opener, Divisadero. The track is a rollicking sing-a-long punk rock number that’ll like have you packing your bags for the neighborhood for which the band espouses so much pride. The two following tracks are both solid in their own right, but lack the catchy chorus of the lead-in number.

I will leave you with this, am I with them? Yes I am.
